"I already know I want an epidural, so why do I need a doula?"

Even if an epidural is given, a doula can be instrumental in helping mom to avoid some of the drawbacks of an epidural, and can help mom to experience the birth even without feeling the sensations of labor.

It's important to point out that not every woman who requests or wants an epidural can receive one, for a variety of reasons.  In this instance, the doula's presence and support are extremely valuable as mom labors without the pain medications she was counting on.
